Youth Mentoring Programs Extended

Update: 4 programs renewed through May 2025

Four programs authorized to continue providing services and supports to nearly 500 children and youth.

At the December meeting of the Children’s Services Council of Leon County (CSC Leon), the Council voted to extend funding for four youth mentoring programs—Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Big Bend, Boys & Girls Club, First Tee of Tallahassee, and Omega Lamplighters—through May 2025. This decision ensures that the 487 children and youth currently served will continue to have access to critical services and supports through the end of the school year.

Since August 2023, these programs have focused on increasing resiliency, improving school performance, and reducing juvenile crime among participants. To date, CSC Leon has invested over $1 million in these initiatives, with an average cost of $2,247 per participant. Highlights of the programs’ outcomes include:

  • Mentor Engagement: 128 mentors provided over 21,000 hours of support to participants in individual and group settings.
  • Program Results: 95% of participants report a positive mentor-youth relationship, and 85% experienced gains in school performance, such as grade promotion or GPA improvement.
  • Social Impact: 65% of participants demonstrated increased resiliency, including gains in social functioning and self-esteem.

The extension, costing an estimated $232,000 across all four programs, will provide continuity for participants and allow them to finish the school year with stable mentorship and support.

Looking ahead, CSC Leon is inviting proposals for year-round youth development programs through its open procurement process for Out of School Time (OST) services. This procurement will fund new programs that begin after the current youth mentoring programs expire in May 2025. Proposals are due by January 17, 2025, and will aim to provide broader opportunities for children and youth in the community throughout the year.

CSC Leon is committed to making data-driven decisions to ensure that its investments align with its mission to improve outcomes for children and families. This extension represents a bridge to a more sustainable, year-round approach to youth development.

For organizations interested in applying for the OST procurement, details are available here. Proposals must demonstrate the ability to provide impactful, inclusive, and innovative services for local children and youth.
